I strongly believe that the system of elementary school is ineffective, non-relevant to the modern life and brings a lot of harm to both psychical and intellectual development of most children. It doesn't matter how good or bad a particular school is: the main problem is not in teachers or technical equipment used in the school, but rather in the approach itself. First of all it makes children sit still for hours contrary to their natural vivacity. It ignores the huge difference in the pupil's cognitive abilities. It wastes three or four years just to teach children several basic skills related to the reading, writing and math. These skills could be taught much better and faster by private teachers at home.
One of the very few arguments in favor of the teaching in elementary school is as follows: by interacting with other pupils children develop their communicative skills. That is, the main benefit of the school is the activity which takes place between lessons rather than within the study. If this is the main goal of schooling, such an activity should be guided, moderated and well organized. A set of desirable social skills might be considered and approved; a number of techniques, games, exercises etc. could be implemented in order to achieve the purpose. That would be a proper approach to the socialization, without grades, homework and competition. In fact, something similar exists within the summer camps.
In other words, there is a time for studying and a time for socializing. The latter requires company of other children, but the former should be done with an individual approach.
